Traveling As A Remote Worker Has Never Been Easier - And More Important - Part 1

There has never been a better time in history for those who can work remotely. Stronger tools, high speed wifi, a boss that is also working remotely… We’ve got it all! The future of work is remote, and it's time to make the most of it.

So what does this mean? It means this is the time for travel! 

Have you ever asked yourself, “I wonder how I could work next to a beautiful beach in a warm tropical country for a few months?” Or, “How cool would it be to ski in the Alps in the morning, and work in the afternoon and evening?” 

If you haven’t (yet), you’ve most likely seen people around you do it by now. I know I have! It inspired me so much that I ended up doing just that for the past year. And I hope my life story will also inspire you to join us in our next remoteworkvillas.com stays. 

Last December, a few couples and I all decided to book a Penthouse apartment in Mazatlan Mexico together. We were four couples in total. We all knew each other loosely, but weren’t close friends (yet!). 

Spoiler alert: It was a life changing experience. I find myself wondering how different my life would be if I hadn’t agreed to go on that adventure with people I barely knew. 

Each couple had their own reason for coming - one was finishing the last run through of the book they had been working on for two years, while still working their full-time day job. Another was in between jobs, and used the villa as a way to interview for a senior management position with Shopify. Another was inspired by everyone else around them and committed to stopping drinking, going three full months sober after leaving the Remote Work Villa.

Every morning, we would all wake up to the sound of the ocean and the warmth of the sun, and then Cassidy would lead us through a 20 minute meditation to kick off the day. The villa was equipped with everything we needed for work and relaxation, from high-speed internet to a private pool and spa. Some of us would start our days with yoga, others with a workout, and one would run to the ocean and body surf all morning before getting started on his work.

And after a long day of work, we would gather together in the common areas and share what we had accomplished that day, and what we would be doing the next day. This kept us accountable, and helped to keep us motivated. Without it being the goal we often times helped each other find solutions to some of our problems due to the scope of knowledge and expertise that was at the table.

What I enjoyed the most were the sunsets. Every evening, I witnessed the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen. I felt like I was watching a live version of National Geographic Ocean Edition, with dolphins jumping out of the water in the distance.

This wasn’t my first travel adventure by any means. But it was the first that was 100% focussed towards building new relationships while working remotely in a beautiful living space. 

There’s something about living with other people, especially highly optimized people. You get to see all their cadences, habits and rituals. It’s not something you can pay for.  It's difficult to describe the level of inspiration I felt from everyone. For example, seeing Michael wake up at 5AM every morning to finish his book, and his dedication to going to bed unapologetically early. Peter’s ability to zoom in to microcap crypto tokens and research for 8 hours straight. Cassidy’s singing and violin playing, and when she was leading a meditation session or making us wonderful gluten-free snacks (and bulletproof coffee!). Each person had their own vibe and something unique to bring to the table. 

I want to recreate this at a massive scale for remote workers worldwide. I want to give everyone the opportunity to connect more deeply with one another, in a fun and safe environment focussed on connection, growth, and discovery. To learn from each other in person like we used to before the advent of cellphones. 

And I want to do it right, in a way that has never been done before.

With almost 6 years of experience working remotely, I’ve tallied some of the biggest challenges I have come across, perhaps you will also relate to some of these: wifi and electricity interruptions, remaining motivated when no one is around, loneliness from working solo, the monotonous routines that kick in similar to when working in an office, budgeting correctly and lack of vacation time.
